Well class,
We have come to the end of our journey! =) My experience with your class was a great one. In essence, our class was like a roller coaster ride. We had some ups as well as some downs. Above all though, we had a fun class where we learned about great time periods and improved our grammar (well...some of you who actually completed the work and paid attention). And although at times some of you asked "Ms. why do we have to read this?" or "why do we have to do this?" I am sure that you learned valuable information from the material we covered this year.

It is a bitter sweet goodbye because although I am happy that the school year is over, believe it or not I am going to miss our class. I am going to miss everyone one of you! I wish you endless luck in your future endevours and hold on for the ride of your life because junior year will seriously be over in a blink of an eye! =)

For this last blog entry, I want you to write me a reflection post. (This is similar to the reflection letter that we have done for each portfolio throughout the marking periods. However, being that we did not have time, your autobiography project and this letter will count as your 4th markig period portfolio grade.)

In this blog spot I want you to reflect on what we covered this year.

- Include your favorite book, poem, short story, and/or other literary work that we have covered.

- Include your favorite activity and an explanation as to why this was your favorite activity.
(I could almost picture someone like George or Big Boy saying "Ms. what if I didn't have favorite    book or activity?" And altough I am going to really find this HARD TO BELIEVE because we did a lot of fun activities to make the not so interesting material, fun. Well for those of you like George and Big Boy, you would tell about the book and activity that you disliked the most with an explanation as to why you disliked it the most.

- Include what you learned.

- The last part of your blog should be labeled like this:

A word of advice:

The title is self-explanatory. For this part, I want you to give some advice for the in-coming sophomores.

               - Include what to do in class.
               - Include what not to do.
               - Include what ANNOYS ME for students to do in class.
             - Include any word of advice that you believe if you knew before hand, would
have helped you done better in class.

One last thing guys. Good luck! I better see ALL OF YOU graduating in 2012! You were my very first class and like I told you all, you are my babies. With this said, I expect to see you all on the field in June 2012. Please don't let me down.

Ms. Benitez =)

  1. The Scarlet Letter was by far the best novel that we read Throughout the year. It was very descriptive and besides being taught in english class, it also showed us history. The book showed how people reacted with certain actions like when Hester committed adultery which made Pearl. i also liked it because their waas a lot of symbols and symbolisms like the A that Hester was forced to wear which represented adultery. My favorite short stoy was the Masque Of the Red Death. It also tought us history because it mentioned the Black plague. It also shows many symbolism like the skull which represents death.
For the next sophomores i would simply suggest that they pay attention and behave good. Ms. Benitez is the best teacher in the school and makes the work very understandable. I would recommend you to not call out and always raise your hand because that's something Ms. Benitez dislikes.

  4. The yeaar is finally over! wow did i enjoy the class (NOT!). I wont lie some materials in class were interesting like the crucible and
reading about Edgar Allan Poe.At time it was easy to fucus in class but at other times, sleeping was just the motive. This school year went by in a blink of an eye. It's nice to say i actually learned something. Thanks Ms.Benitez (the teacher who is just a teacher not a friend lol) i will miss this class.

ps. You can only get a good grade in this class if your actually motivated. the first Marking period i came into class chiling but once the seoson came around (baseball) i knew i had to get started and pass the class. although i failed the first marking period i passed the second with a B. i guess what im trying to say with this unesesary paragraph is to stay motivated look foward to being a better student and things will flow easily for the remainder of the year.

  5. I am greatful of having a great English teacher like you. Throughout the year I have learned many things that have made me improve in my writing and reading skills. As we began a new novel, we learned new terms. In addition, I learned how to correctly add commas. From the beginning to the end of the year I enjoyed every novel and every lesson. Although, my favorite subject was Transcendentalism, and my favorite novel was Ethan Frome. There were many activities we did that I don't remember them all, but overall they were all fun. The one that I most enjoyed was creating the poster for an aphorism. I enjoyed reading the aphorisms and anylzing them.
    Word of Advice:
The school year is coming to an end and you'll soon recive your in-coming sophomores. They might be better,or worst than us,but never stop teaching because you have a lot to teach. Always do your fun activities, and never do any boring ones. Remember that you are capable of teaching anyone no matter if their bad or good.

  6. My favorite book had to be the autobiography on Fredrick Douglass. That book truly spoke to me because the message it was trying to send is something I believe in which is that any person no matter what background can become whatever they want to be. It's a good motto to live by. My favorite activity had to be any of the ones where we were allowed to draw a poster. It gave me a chance to show my unique "creativity" Benitez knows what I mean. I learned alot of things in this clas, like when to use an apostrophe, the right times to use and, and other things that seem simple and elementary that are actually deep and complex.
For the incoming sophmores, come to class on time, whenever she tells you how an assignment will be "fun" that's her secret way of saying "here's this tough project so get ready to work your ass off." Always take care of your work she likes to surprise you on a portfolio so stay frosty. That's about it.

  7. Through out this school year we've learned so much from Ms.Benitez. Our class has done some fun activities. I would have to say the best activity or section we covered was the tragedy of Julius Caesar. Even though it was hard, we dove into Shakespears work and analyzed every aspect of it. It was difficult to understand but with her help it became very clear. It taught us how people were treated in that specific time. It covered betrayal, glory, and fallen heroes. Another section we covered that i enjoyed was the Transcendentalism theme. It was mainly about individualism. An author that opened my eyes was Ralph Waldo Emerson and his self reliance essay.

    Now a Word of Advice-
Sophmore year flies by really fast. You may not expect it but it does. Relax, take it easy and DO ALL of your work. Dont feel stressed or overwhelmed with the amount of work because stress is just an anxiety and makes matters worse.

    What to do in class-
Ask as many questions as you like. Never feel like your question is pointless or dumb. No question is ever too dumb for an answer.Listen to when she says "HINT HINT."Talk when at the right times, as long as Ms.Benitez is alright with it. Be EXTREMELY nice to her and do all the sucking up as you can because in the end when you need help or a favor shes right there in 308 with open arms. :)

What NOT to do in class-
PROCRASTINATE. Procrastination is your enemy. Dont talk while shes teaching because you might miss out on something important, and you never know when you might be quizzed.

    What ANNOYS her-
Singing, laughing at inappropriate times, being immature, and complaining about work.

Theres nothing i can really say if i knew beforehand. But be prepared and stay focused.

Overall this year as a sophmore in Ms.Benitez's english class i can say i've had a great experience. I can honestly say that i will sincerely miss her and i will visit her every so often. Shes helped me with so much over the year . Her next class is very lucky. Though it may not seem like it at fist you will come to realize what an amazing class it is.

  8. I have learned many things throughout the school year in Ms.benitez's english class. Some things include that she is one of the only teachers that actually call your parents. I also learned that she is. And since she is making us pick our favorite thing we read and activity we did....I'm guessing it was the Julius Caesar play and poster. I don't know why, maybe because it was entertaining?

    Advice:
if you want to sleep in her class without her noticing, grow long hair and put your head down.Lol but really just do your work and stuff actually read what she leaves for HW, because i guarantee you the next day there will be a quiz on it. And Spark notes never works for her class, she checks.

    What to do
Do your work, and participate, if you get on her good side you'll get better grades. It's also really good if you read what she tells you to read, it's never that much (lies)...do it during lunch or like 5 min. before class begins. Also learn to write and read good so you can actually pass her class and not fail.

    What not to do
Don't annoy her because she will embarrass you in front of the class...like nydair lol. Also don't cheat because like i said before, she is one of the teachers that actually checks.

    What annoys her
    cell phones
    loud people
    talking over her
    complaining about work
    anything fun

And also, i would have wished to know that for the 3rd marking period, the grade you get on your research PAPER (not essay)the grade you get on it, would basically be the same grade you get on your report card.

  10. Guys,

Very cute comments! =( I am really sad and very touched by your comments. Thank you for keeping it real! =) Thank you Francis, yes, I literally felt as your mother sometimes. Thank you Big Boy and George for telling it how it is. If you slack off in my class, you will fail. Thank you Maria and Fernando for the sweet comments. Thanks a bunch Mike and Luis for telling the future sophomores about my oh so fun assignments (haha =) and that I am always available for help, literally 24/7. And Chris, yes, I do call parents and I hope the in-comming sophomores keep that in mind.

Thank you guys for a great year!

I will truly miss you! =)

  12. Reflection- My favorite play was The Tradegy of Julius Caesar. My favorite activity was when we had to choose an aphorism, explain it and relate it to someone. It was my favorite because i like how situations of life are summerized in simple aphorisms.

This year i learned a lot of things. For example, i learned more vocabulary or big words =). I also learned a lot about times in history like transdentalism and all that. I guess i got better at writing essays even though most of the times i dint go over 80 or 85 :D. I learned a thousand other things but since is to much im not going to write it down. The important thing is that i learned and thats all that matters.

    A WORD OF ADVICE:

    What to do in class?

The first thing you should do is be QUIET! Then you do the DO NOW because she checks it every other day. You should definetely do your essays and OEQ's because they are very important numbers to your final grade. Pay attention in class because most of the times she will say all the answers to quizzes and tests.

    What not to do?

1.Do not be late to class. Dont talk unless she asks a question. AND raise your hand!!!

    What ANNOYS her?

When you giver her attitude, when your late to class, and when you dont do your work. & oh when you talk too much

-I tried my best, and i guess everything paid off =D

Thanks a lot ms. Benitez! Ur the b3st! =)

  13. My favorite book was the Scarlet letter. With the book's difficult language, i couldn't understand what was going on. With you being my teacher; you took us step by step to understand each line and quote with every book and with every author. I must say if i didn't have you as my teacher i would've failed my English II. One of the reasons The Scarlet letter was one of my favorite books we've covered so far. I really like books with great storyline and a somewhat of a nice ending. The Scarlet letter delivered both of them. With Hester Prynne being isolated by her society because she committed a sin "Adultery." Nobody wanted to near her because she is the devil. The book also has some irony into it. Situational irony because the village send her to the woods to lived alone with her daughter Pearl; but they go to her for her being very exceptional in tailoring. With the story having a good storyline because Dimmesdale was the father of the daughter. In some points of the story there was moments were they acted as a family and Pearl not even knowing about it. With the sin he committed; he cannot bear his guilt. With Chillingworth "taking care of him" is also making him worse by bringing out the sin and make him feel even more worse. In the end of the book Dimmesdale dies of his own sin and says thank you to Chillingworth. Chillingworh in rage cause of this now he his engulf with guilt of killing Dimmesdale. That is why The Scarlet letter is one of my favorite books weve read so far.

Sorry to say this but i dont recall having any "fun activities." The only thing that was fun and funny is when we were reading Julius Caesar out loud. You didnt want us to read because it will take too long and we cant even pronounce the words correctly. The second thing that was close to fun was that poem we did about Frederick Douglass I believe. When Kaleb brought the guitar and when Michael said a word with a letter that started with a S,D or a C. When everybody else was started to say their poems. Most of them were good but i have to admit that Umar poem on Slavery was probably the best one out of the whole class.

    A word of advice:
Always sit next to the smart one and listen to the smart one. Trust me, sitting next to a person that doesnt do work and distract you from doing your work and not paying attention is bad. Always listen to Ms. Benitez (if you have her next year) because she is actually the best English Teacher i ever had in my life so far. I know I will be coming to her next year with her great ability of analyzing quotes and read line per line. What you need TO DO is do all your work and if you have any trouble with anything go to Miss Benitez. Remember she stays here until 6 o' clock after school. I'm still trying to figure out which restaurant she works at so i can get a discount on their food. What not TO DO is use her phone when your in her class. You might already know this but trust me she will take your phone away, take this from personal experience. Also not to talk when shes talking, my class is the most loudest, obnoxious, and funniest class she ever had. Most of the time we get her mad.
All i can say is a few simple words but these simple words are pretty deep.
Don't mess up in school, if you messed up in school then you will mess up in life.
P.S Take this to heart im like so serious. When she says "Guys this will be a fun project."
ITS A LIE! Its a horrible project and its so annoying and frustrating then you will be stressed out.
P.S.S You are my best English teacher i've ever had in my life. In serious your the best I really hoped you have a great summer, hoped your team goes to the world cup and wish you best of luck for next year of teaching.

    Sincerely, Your Student,
    Juan Jimenez

  15. Wow Juan nice advice. :D

My favorite book was "Tragedy of Julius Cesar." Even though it was difficult to understand, you explained to us what it meant, section by section. Which I do thank you for it. Another thing we covered was the short story of the "Masque Of the Red Death." This was by far the BEST story I've read, we learn about history and it was pretty good. My favorite poem was Edgar Allan Poe AND Emily Dickinson. Both poets are my favorite with there mysterious writing. In order for you to understand the poem you would read in between the lines which you've once again helped us. Lastly, was the Self-reliance story, when we took a quote and analyze it with a partner. I really did like that. There was a lot of thing I've learn, I felt I really improve in everything and as you saw, my Final Exams grade, I was so proud of myself. :]

    A word of advice:

Message to all sophomores. If you have her as your English 2 teacher, consider yourself lucky. She is by far the most understanding, fun, and nice teacher. Throughout your sophomore year, I guarantee you that you'll find English so much easier. Another thing, take her class serious. Yeah, at time you can joke around, but when it comes to learning a new lesson or something like that, don't distract her. Your not only distracting her but your distracting people who actually wants to learn. Don't treat her bad if she's giving you the help you need to pass. If you choose to be a "class clown" and constantly distract people, well... I don't think you would want that because being a sophomore once more isn't the best thing. Don't always make mistakes so you can learn, take an advice from someone who been through it.

In class we.... work, read, and constantly asking questions when there isn't something we quite understand. We always have a good time, always pushing our problems away when we are in that class.

Thins you should do is.... talk. Don't speak when someone else is speaking. That is VERY rude.

What annoys her is... when you talk, when your late and when you slack off towards the end of the year. She also doesn't like anyone cursing or such.
And don't get mad and take your anger out on the teacher or your fellow students. Push away your problems in that class, believe me you'll do fine. :)

I will truly miss Ms. Benitez. She have helped me on my work and I do have to say... I felt like I really improved. I will always visit you miss and come to you for help. If the new coming sophomore aren't good, you tell me. I'll have a little talk with them.
