The Tragedy of Julius Caesar

Friendship is a major theme in the play.  Pompey, Caesar's friend and partner, turns his back on him and plots a plan to destroy him. Then, we have Cassius who like Pompey, also plots a plan to destroy and uses Brutus, his so called "friend" to enforce his plan. For this blog question, you are to explore the theme of friendship in the play and in your life. Please answer the questions in at least two complete paragraphs.
                          * Is there anything for which you would betray a friend?
                      * Which is more important to you, friendship or materialistic gains? Explain.
                     * Describe Cassius. Is he truly a "friend" to Brutus? Explain your answer.

P.S. Please try to comment on each other's comments. I want to see what everyone has to say about each other.

Have fun!

  1. Due to Cassius selfishness, he uses Brutus which he calls a "friend" to help get revenge over Caesar. But Caesar was a friend of Brutus making it hard for him to decide who to help. If I was Brutus, i wouldn't betray Caesar, for anything, because he was my friend. After all A real friend doesn't use you for their own gain, and if they end up doing so, then they weren't your friend after all. And by using this logic, we can say that Cassius really wasn't Brutus's friend. All he wanted Brutus for was to gain support for his act of revenge on Caesar
To me, Friendship is more important that materialistic gains. We all have to remember that materialistic things can go at any time given, but true friends are till the end. So why would you have something that won't last forever when you can have something thats meaning full and lasts till the end?

  2. Wow! Great points Chris! You are absolutely correct. Materialistic things do come and go, but a "real" friend will always remain by your side. We will see if Brutus does remain a "true" friend to Caesar. Although, we already know the ending of the play.

  3. Cassius is trying to gain power by using Brutus which he calls a "friend" to get revenge on Caesar. ANd Caesar was a friend of Brutus. ANd by Cassius telling Brutus all the negative about Caesar it makes it diffcult for Brutus to choose who to help.A friend is a friend and they should never do anything to change that especislly not to gain power over someone else. And that was what Cassius did.
To me friends are more important because they are always there for you when ever you need help or anything else. Some Friends are not always thereand try to take over things for example cassius. Friends are always there till the end.....

  4. Cassius uses Brutus for his combinience. Cassius wants to destroy Ceasar and so he thinks Brutus would be convinced easily to do so. Brutus as we know is Ceasar's "friend", which we wont expect to betray him. The meaning of a friend to me is someone who will stay there with you when you have everything, and when you dont have anything. As well in bad times and good times, not temporality but until the end.

I wouldnt betray my friend for anything. Is important to have that person next to you, when you dont have anything, because the worst feeling is to feel lonely. There are not many friends in a lifetime. If i decide to take a hundred dollars instead of my friend im failing to my self. Those dollars are going to be gone by tomorrow, but a friend will always be there.

Cassius is not the friend i would like to have. He is not as true friend, because after he uses Brutus he wont care what happens to him. He is just using this opportunity that Brutus is a friend of Ceasar. So he is only taking advantage of the situation, because he looks at Brutus like the way for power. Even though we also know that he is using Brutus so that if anything he wont be blamed, but Brutus.

  5. Friendship and betrayel plays an important role in "The Tragedy of Julius Caesar." Cassius is a dangerous and hateful character in the play. He plans to persuade Brutus to go against Caesar's loyalty. The play mentions that Caesar and Brutus are great friends. As we know, Cassius is not a "friend" to Brutus, he only wants to gain power over Brutus. This way Cassius can convice Brutus that Caesar is a evil and selfish person. Eventually, Cassius and Brutus will kill Caesar to pervent him from being leader of Rome.

Furthermore, betrayel is the last thing I would do to a friend. The people you love and have next to you will always be there if you want them to. However, betraying them will make you lose them. Freindship is very important to me because without friends you can't surivive this huge world. As you have read, Cassius will make Brutus betray his true friend Caesar.

  6. I would never betray a friend for anything, and I am pretty sure none of my friends will betray for anything either. Friendship is more important to than materialistic gains. The reason why is because the materislistic things can not talk to me when Im feeling down or play with me when I want to have fun. You can lose a materialistic item but you can never lose a real friend. Friendships hold more value than any materialistic object. So that is why friendship is more important to me.

Cassius is really devious, he tries to get what he wants no matter what it takes. He doesn't care if he hurts someone in the process. Cassius is not a true friend, because if he was he would have respected Brutus decision instead of going behind his back and trying to trcik him. Real friens do not do that to one another. Cassius takes advantage of Brutus because he knows Brutus is not the smartest guy so he'll most likely fall for anything. So Cassius is not a good friend to Brutus, well Cassius is not a good friend at all.

  7. I wouldn't betray a friend for anything because I wouldn't want them to do anything like that to me. To me a friend is more important because a good friend is hard to find & material things are always going to be around , they come and go but good friends aren't going to just leave your side if hthey are true to you and have respect and loyalty for you.

Cassius is really not his friend he's just using Brutus to get back at Caesar. He wants to turn everybody against Ceasar and he's being selfish because he doesn't want Caesar to have the power that he wants.

  8. I believe that true friends are much more
important then material items. Material items are things that could just be bought off of any store shelf. Friends aren't anything that can just be mass produced at will. I wouldn't even think of betraying any of my friends. I highly doubt any of them would say anything different either.

Cassius is not a true friend to Brutus in the slightest. He just thinks of Brutus as a stepping stone in his grand scheme. If he was a true friend then Cassius would not be trying to deceive Brutus.Cassius decided though that if he could not get Brutus to join his cause truthfully then he would use trickery. Friends are one of the most important things in most peoples lives and shouldn't be toyed with.

  9. Friends come and go and people change. I think that I would betray a friend depending on the situation. For instance, if one of my friends were to somehow get me in trouble I would say everything that happened because first of all, a “good” friend wouldn’t put you in that type of situation. So what type of “good” friend is that? Moreover, if my friend killed someone I don’t think I would betray them because my friends aren’t like that and if they were, well as the saying goes, “You don’t see nothing, hear nothing, and don’t say anything!” I think a friend is just someone to help you see your mistakes at times and I think that in a lifetime there may only be ONE GOOD friend that will actually stay being your friend through good and bad times.

In my opinion, I believe friends and materials are kind of the same in a way. I would pick friends over materialistic things anytime. However, friends are people so they’re never going to stay the same, eventually they’re going to change and it may result in good and it may result in bad. I say that friends relate to materials because a material can break any day and you just move on with your life. A friend can come and go and at the end you move on with your life. They can be here one day and the next be gone. You never know the outcome of life so you can’ say which friend will be here for you all the time especially when you need them.

I don’t think Cassius will ever know the meaning of a good friend because he is a rude and ignorant person. He uses the term friendship more as an ally type of thing. He isn’t a friend whatsoever because he’s using Brutus mainly as an object. He plans to turn him against Caesar and also bribes him to be hungry for power. Cassius is not a good friend to Brutus because he also plans of ways to deceive him. What kind of friend tries to change a person? A friend is someone who is there for you because they can relate to you or they like your personality; they’re not there to change you so you can be like them.

  10. Great Job Class! As you already know, neither Cassius or Brutus are true friends of Caesar's. Both metaphorically and literally "stab" Caesar on the back. I am glad that most of you chose friendship over materialistic gains.
